Foley

Almost all of the sounds, if not all, are replaced in movies which to me was almost shocking yet very intriguing.  When people think about movies, sound most likely is not something that comes to mind.  For example, when have you ever heard someone say that I didn’t like that movie because the sounds sounded cheap or were mixed poorly.  However if the sounds are off or they are not giving an accurate representation to what is on screen, anyone would notice that something isn’t right. A sound recordist will capture the sounds on set as a placeholder for post production.  This is when foley comes into play next to other things like ADR, and sound editing.  A foley artist's job is to recreate sounds that were originally captured on set using pretty much any type of hypercardioid microphone.  A foley artist has to be creative in the materials they use to emulate what is seen on screen.
